The GunSafe Story: Where Craftsmanship Meets Security

In the heart of a quiet Amish community in central Illinois, a legacy of woodworking has been passed down through generations—laying the foundation for what is now known as Custom Cabinet Security. Our story begins with Ed Yoder, a master craftsman whose woodworking roots run deep, going back to his own grandfather. Alongside him was his son-in-law, William Schlabach, a skilled carpenter raised on a farm just outside Arthur, Illinois. William’s early work on intricate trim and archways in the early 1900s showcased his commitment to detail and precision.

When William married Ed’s daughter in 1998, it wasn’t just the start of a new family—it was the beginning of a powerful business partnership. William, already successful in the building industry, joined forces with Ed’s established woodworking business, then known as Wedge Woodworking. Together, they began producing handcrafted cabinets of unmatched quality.

They saw a unique opportunity in the firearms market. High-end collectors—including figures like General Norman Schwarzkopf—were looking for more than just security; they wanted display pieces that matched the artistry of their collections. That vision gave rise to the creation of our GunSafes: the perfect blend of protection and presentation.

Each cabinet we build is a testament to that original vision—a secure, yet beautifully crafted showcase for heirloom-quality firearms. We believe that exceptional firearms, with their scrollwork and engravings, deserve to be seen—not locked away behind cold steel. That’s why our designs are fully customizable, allowing each customer to choose the size, features, wood species, and finish that best suits their collection and home.

Now in its third generation, the business remains in the family. My name is Nelson, and I’m proud to carry on the tradition as the current owner. Ed is my grandfather, and William is my father. I grew up around sawdust and blueprints, and today I continue to honor the craftsmanship and values they instilled in me.

Our cabinets are built to last for generations. We’re also committed to sustainable practices—using a blend of hand tools and power units to reduce energy, recycling wood scraps, and illuminating our cabinets with energy-efficient LED lighting.

Though the business has transitioned from Wedge Woodworking to Custom Cabinet Security to reflect our focus on secure, display-worthy furniture, the soul of our company remains unchanged. Every cabinet is a continuation of the craftsmanship, integrity, and attention to detail that began generations ago in rural Illinois.
